The 2nd International Symposium was held on December 11 and 12, 2014. A student-oriented English-only poster session and workshops were also held alongside the conventional symposium to promote the application of language skills and turn robust professional abilities into English. The event started off in English, with a greeting from President Yamaguchi on the first day to more than 140 attendees, including 15 foreign students. Following the President’s greeting, we heard talks from Professor Elena Savinova, University of Strasbourg, France; Professor Chen, National Taiwan University; and Professor Li, National University of Singapore, on leading research and ideal leadership. The faculty and staff from Hokkaido University also presented research results on mathematic integration and materials science. Then, in the evening, participants moved to Jouzankei for the poster session. The second day was devoted to PBL-type (problem-based learning) workshops, where participants participated in discussions on the applicability of science and technology to society based on a movie. Besides being focused on developing professional abilities, this symposium intended to deepen understanding toward science and technology ethics, as well as cultural diversity.
