Two international students were chosen to visit the MLIT Flood Control Project on June 15, 2015, as part of the “Special Lecture on Science and Technology Studies.” The tour began at the “Museum of Ishikari River” situated in Ishikari, a neighboring city of Sapporo. After a brief introduction to the outline of the Ishikari water system, they moved to Houheikyou Dam and Jouzankei Dam. They were given access to discharge outlets that were normally prohibited to the public so that they learned the internal structure of dams and to better understand the principles of water regulation.

Mr. J.M. Fleury, senior adviser for World Federation of Science Journalists, also participated the visit as an observer, he introduced dam removal policies in Western countries. Hearing advice from a different viewpoint was a particularly effective way for students to gain more multilateral knowledge.
