Greetings from Coordinator Tetsuya Taketsugi
Congratulations on being accepted to SMatS. On behalf of the faculty members in charge of the program, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations.

In 2018, we proposed chemical reaction discovery science as a new academic field that combines computational science and data science with experimental science, and launched the Center for Chemical Reaction Discovery Research (ICReDD) as a research institute to promote this research. I did. In other words, the "Smart Materials Science Program" is a deep collaboration between ALP and ICReDD, which I introduced at the beginning, and a fusion of computational science, mathematical science, and data science, breaking away from the traditional trial-and-error experiment-only research method. This is an educational program to develop human resources who have acquired "smart materials science skills" that can accelerate the speed of materials science research and spark innovation.

Until last year, this program was targeted at doctoral students, but this year it has been expanded to include master's programs. All of you who were selected are here at this venue. Therefore, this is the first time for all of you to take on this program as a first-year master's student. Although there has been a long period of time where face-to-face discussions have been difficult due to the coronavirus, it has recently become possible to hold on-site, face-to-face international conferences and even travel overseas. Please learn a lot from such lively discussions. Also, try to interact with people from various fields. We look forward to your success.
Here are some impressions from the 5th program students.
Kaneon Sugimoto (Chemical Sciences and Engineering, Department of Comprehensive Chemistry/Structural Chemistry Laboratory) said, ``Computational chemistry is not used much in my laboratory, so I would like to learn at SMatS and further expand my research skills.'' I would like to acquire a high level of expertise.'' Taiga Tsue (Chemical Sciences and Engineering Department of Comprehensive Chemistry/Organic Chemistry Laboratory 1) said, ``If you only belong to a laboratory, your research skills will not be strengthened. However, I think there are few opportunities to acquire transferable skills, the ability to form a human network, and the ability to communicate internationally.Using SMatS, you can acquire these three skills and continue your own research activities in the future. I want to be able to develop this and contribute to society," he said with words of hope. Congratulations to everyone who was selected.
