The essence of bio-pharmaceutical technology <BR> Learning genetic engineering

The synthesis of compounds inside microorganisms under low environmental impact has been gaining attention as a form of next-generation pharmaceutical technology. As a chemistry student who wished to learn more about this new technique, I was allowed access to the applied biochemistry laboratory for two weeks. I had the opportunity to analyze the biosynthesis mechanism of oxygen inhibitors even though I was a complete outsider. Although I was unable to complete my analysis within the given time frame, by actually practicing pure culture of targeted bacteria, sterile techniques, genome DNA purification, and PCR, I was able to apply textbook knowledge to real use and gained further insight into the thinking of a bioengineer. I also learned the basic principles of the optical microscope, LC/ESI-MS, DNA spectrometer, and PCR equipment. This lab visit has opened my eyes to the diversity of biochemical research.
