President Yamaguchi declared his determination to promote mathematics-integrated education at this special lecture on July 3, 2014. As an expert in mathematics, President Yamaguchi illustrated the importance of mathematic integration when expanding the scientific frontier by referring to the history of geometry and materials science. Then, Professor Yasumasa Nishiura from the Advanced Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University, introduced examples of mathematics-integrated research and elaborated the importance of cross-disciplinary discourse. Program coordinator Koichiro Ishimori and Professor Ichiro Tsuda from the Research Center for Integrative Mathematics joined an ensuing discussion where the significance of keeping up with latest trends in a variety of academic fields and communicating with researchers from other disciplines for mathematicians were further debated.
