Job Hunting Trends for2024 Ph.D. Students(Akarik Co., Ltd.)

Akarik Co., Ltd., which has been in business for more than 15 years specializing in career support for engineers and researchers, conducted an original survey of science students who will graduate in 2024, , Master's) and doctoral programs (hereafter referred to as Ph.D.) were compared.

Survey outline

Implementation period

November 11-24, 2022
subject 261 science students who will graduate in 2024 among the members of the job hunting site “Akariku” specializing in graduate students and science students (Breakdown: 85 doctoral students, 168 master's students, 8 undergraduate students)
Research objectives Grasping job-hunting trends of science students
Survey method Internet survey

Survey summary

  • Doctoral students spend an average of 22.9 hours more time per week on research than bachelor's and master's students
  • Doctoral students spend an average of 3.2 hours less time per week on job hunting than bachelor's and master's students
  • About half of the doctoral students who participated in internships (more than 80% of bachelor's and master's students participated)
  • Compared to bachelor's and master's students, doctoral students tend to choose companies that emphasize the environment in which they can make the most of their research and majors.

The doctor spends an average of 51.8 hours a week studying

Doctors spend less than 5 hours a week looking for a job

50% of doctoral students participated in corporate internships

Employment places emphasis on an environment where research and majors can be utilized

For doctoral job hunting

This survey clarified the difference in job hunting trends between doctoral and bachelor's/master's students. Compared to bachelor's and master's degree holders, doctoral degree holders spend more time on research and schoolwork, leading a life focused on research. Against this background, the amount of time a doctor spends on job hunting is as short as 4.9 hours, and a more efficient method of job hunting is required. About half of doctoral students participated in internships, which tends to be considerably lower than bachelor's and master's students. It may be necessary to provide support to increase opportunities for doctoral students who wish to find employment in the private sector to experience internships.

When choosing a company, emphasis is placed on whether or not they can make use of their research and major, and precisely because they have advanced to a doctoral course, they tend to want to make use of their research experience in their careers after completion. According to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's School Basic Survey, 67.7% of those who got a job immediately after completing a doctoral course, and 52.6% of those who got a job as a regular employee, were lower than those who graduated from a master's course or an undergraduate course. increase. Doctoral students who have less time to spend on job hunting find it difficult to participate in internships and information sessions, which may put them at a disadvantage in terms of time when looking for a job as a new graduate.

It goes without saying that research and study, which are the main duties of students, will be the main part of their lives, but it is equally important to consider their careers after graduation. We recommend that you start preparing for job hunting early in order to pursue a career in which many doctoral students want to make the most of their research and major. On the other hand, I think that there are aspects that are difficult to realize only with the awareness of the person himself. Universities and society are expected to create an environment in which doctoral course graduates can find stable jobs.
