In this Ph.Discover, we are collaborating with multiple companies including Oracle Japan, students, alumni, and other universities to expand the career paths of doctoral course graduates and develop human resources who will support future innovation. increase. Furano City established the Smart City Strategy Office in April 2020 and is working on creating a livable city using digital technology. We conducted the "IoT Snow Removal Efficiency Demonstration Experiment" with the aim of visualizing and improving the efficiency of snow removal work using data.
This time, in the "Doctoral DX Education Program: Smart City Promotion Support for Furano City, Hokkaido" project, which is jointly implemented by three institutions, Hokkaido University has provided its doctoral students with "Oracle for Research" to secure Utilizing the cloud services of "Oracle Cloud Infrastructure" such as "Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse" and "Oracle Analytics Cloud" that can easily analyze data, we will work on proposing measures to solve the two challenges presented by Furano City. .

What would you like to see most in the realization of a smart city?
Taketoshi Kita, Mayor of Furano City:
The population continues to decline, and the impact of the coronavirus has created a sense of stagnation in both the economy and the living environment. I have a strong desire to break through it. That is why we launched the Smart City Strategy Office.
Please tell us what you are most looking forward to in the DX education program for the doctoral course.
Koichiro Ishimori, Vice President, Hokkaido University University / Professor Faculty of Science:
What I would like to emphasize most in this project is the participation of graduate students in the doctoral course of our university. The eight participating graduate students do not specialize in IT, and are doing diverse research at four graduate schools. In other words, we specialize in themes that are different from DX, but I think this is the big key. If you are aiming for an efficient solution, it may be better for graduate students who specialize in IT and information science to participate. However, I believe that our strength lies in the fact that we are a team with diverse backgrounds and ways of thinking.
In order to solve regional problems, it is necessary to ascertain things from various angles. I am an amateur graduate student when it comes to local social issues. However, graduate students routinely undergo training in finding and solving problems through research, and we consider this to be a kind of generic skill. I hope that this skill will be put to good use in order to solve the unique regional issues of Furano City. It will be an important experience for them. From now on, we will face various problems, so it is important in terms of education to have the experience of learning about the world and society, rather than shutting ourselves away in the laboratory. In this way, we believe that the participation of our graduate students in the doctoral program is of great significance.
What makes the project unique?
Mitsuru Honda, Executive Officer, Oracle Corporation Japan, Cloud Sales Headquarters:
In terms of uniqueness...that's a difficult question. I think it is fundamental that local people solve problems for local people, but as Vice President Ishimori said earlier, graduate students and people from different fields should think together and I think it's significant that people in the area find what is the best solution for them. We teach students the possibilities of DX, data analysis, and how to use it, but at the end of this workshop, a presentation by Hokkaido University students is prepared. Students will convey their thoughts to people living in Furano. It is very important in such an initiative to have people understand so that they can put the measures into practice, in other words, to cultivate the ability to communicate and communicate, and I believe that it will be a valuable opportunity.
After this press conference, the outline of the project was introduced in various media. Thank you very much.
