Ph. Dialogue「博士人材セミナー」は、Ph. Discover連携企業からゲストを迎え「博士課程修了者が企業でどのように活躍しているのか」「企業は博士人材に何を求めているのか」について話していただき、後半はゲストと学生が対話を通して交流する企画です。14回目は北川冬弥さん（パナソニック株式会社）をお迎えしました。

松下幸之助創業、「産業報国」の志を大切に

This is Kitagawa from Panasonic Corporation. I studied in an acoustics laboratory at university, and I am still involved in research and development in the audio department related to speakers and amplifiers.

When I was a student, when I wasn't doing research, I was a member of the Young Professionals Board of the IEEE (American Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), and I devoted myself to my own business, developing apps and teaching programs to children. I feel that these experiences have helped me in my current career.

When I was looking for a job, I focused on going to a large company first. Another reason is that I wanted to learn about society in an environment unique to a large company. , the hurdles will be higher. I thought that now was the time to use the one-time privilege of being a new graduate if I wanted to work for a large company.

Among the large companies, the answer to the question, "Why did you choose Panasonic?" In addition, although our company has a strong impression of being a home appliance manufacturer, our current business is wide-ranging, and I felt that my areas of expertise could be utilized in other fields as well.

パナソニックグループは、「経営の神様」と言われる松下幸之助が松下電気器具製作所を創業したところから始まっています。現在、当グループが掲げる七精神の中で、私が特に大切にしている言葉が「産業報国」です。 人の役に立ち、社会に貢献できてはじめてその対価として報酬をいただき、会社の事業を産業として成り立たせていく。この理念を仕事の柱にしています。

グリーンオフィスに音の効果をプラス

My current job is working on spatial acoustic control. In recent years, "greening" of the workplace, which is called a green office, has become common. By incorporating sound effects, such as the chirping of birds and the babbling of a river, could it be possible to increase the concentration and relaxation of workers? We are conducting advanced development of acoustic technology and verifying the effects of sound on people. It is my job to conduct biometric evaluation experiments that measure the brain waves of people who have actually experienced it, and to present the results as papers so that they can be used in future sales promotion activities.

経済的なメリットを上回る音響研究のやりがいを再発見

I joined the company in the spring of 2019, and in fact, at the same time, I entered the doctoral program at my alma mater. When I was a master's student, I wanted to go out into society as soon as possible.

ただ、いずれは博士号を、とも考えていましたので、「就職と博士課程進学を同時にできないのかな？」と思い立ち、内定段階で当社の人事部に電話をかけて「博士課程の入試を受けてもいいでしょうか？」と相談しました。そこで「前例がないから受け入れられない」と言われなかったのも、当社の懐の深いところだと思います。入社時にはずいぶん珍しがられましたが、入社3年目の今も仕事と進学の両立生活が続いています。

Then why did you make such a choice? I'll explain why.

First of all, from an economic point of view, if you are a master's student and go on to a doctoral course, you normally do not need to pay an examination fee or admission fee. However, once you go out into the world and then aim for graduate school again, the story changes, and you will incur examination fees and admission fees that are by no means cheap. As for tuition fees and scholarships, most new graduates who have left their parents' support and become the head of the household have little income, so applications for tuition exemptions and scholarships are almost always successful. Given these benefits, I had no hesitation.

Also, I realized this after balancing work and further education, but during my master's period, I sometimes felt doubts, "Is research on acoustics really useful for society?" When I was actually assigned to the research department of a company, I was surprised to find that there was so much demand for sound research in society, and that the company decided to spend the budget to advance development.

先ほどの「産業報国」の通り、「売れる」ということは社会の役に立つものを作っているということに直結している。そのことに気づいてから、研究に対して今まで以上に前向きになり、土日に博士課程の研究を進めるのも非常に楽しくなりました。経済的なメリットよりも、はるかに大きい収穫だったと思います。

面接は「演じる」よりもありのままに

ここからは、事前に皆さんから送っていただいた質問にお答えします。「博士号取得者に企業が求めること」について、皆さんもまずは「高い専門能力」を想定されると思いますが、もう一つは論文執筆による論理的な思考力や「社内での会話の際には結論から話す」というような社会人としての力、これらが学士や修士の新卒よりは備わっていると期待されます。

「どのような人材像が期待されますか？」という質問もありましたが、きっとこういう質問をされる方は「（内定をもらうために）自分は何を、どう頑張ったらいいんだろう？」と一途に考えていらっしゃるのではないかと思います。もちろん、応募者には自分の研究が好きで、好きだからこそ知識も深く、入社後も新しいことにチャレンジしてくれるだろうという期待はありますが、もし皆さんが応募した企業から内定をもらえなくても、それはあなたとその企業の相性が合わなかっただけ。能力ではなく、特性が合わなくてマッチングに至らなかった、そう考えてみてください。

On the contrary, if I am hired without being recognized for the fact that I am “acting” according to the company I apply to, I think I will become tired and exhausted later on. I would like you to choose a company where you can shine as you are, without pretending to be yourself.

The next question is, "What is the job content of Ph.D.?" In the case of our company, as far as I know, I have the impression that there are many R&D positions in cutting-edge departments and so-called star departments.

「大学の研究と企業研究の違い」については、企業研究は今の社会課題をどう解決していくかを追求し、世の中の役に立つものこそ売れるという考え方を起点にしています。その延長として、大学では論文の出来が本人の評価につながりますが、企業は論文プラス製品が売れたかどうかが評価の基準となります。予算の獲得のために上司を説得する必要があるのは、大学も企業も同じです。私自身の経験談で言うと、将来性を見込んで先行投資してもらえる余地があるところは、パナソニックのような大企業ならではと感じています。

自分の能力を客観的に見て「公明正大」に

就職活動の時はいろいろな人からアドバイスを受けると思いますが、全てのアドバイスを鵜呑みにしすぎない方がいいと思います（笑）。というのは、話上手な先輩が「面接の練習はしなくても大丈夫」と言っても、それはその人だから「大丈夫」なのであって自分がどうかはまた別の話ですよね。話した人の背景や能力を自分のそれと照らし合わせて、どうするかを決めるといいのではないでしょうか。

それから、内定獲得を焦るあまり、「御社が第一志望です」という言葉を乱発してしまうのもおすすめしません。言い方にもよると思いますが、全く思ってもいないことは言わない方がいい。たとえ第一志望だとアピールしなくても、あなたの価値を認めてくれるところは内定を出してくれます。嘘はつかないで「公明正大」に。当社の七精神の一つです。

Q: How do you manage your time to balance work and your doctoral course?

Kitagawa: I'm sorry, but I don't think this will help you much, but in my case, I was very lucky. Currently, I am writing a dissertation that will lead to my Ph.D. If my work and my research field did not overlap at all, I would have had a lot of things I wanted to do on Saturdays and Sundays, and to be honest, I think I would have run out of time. Now I can't help but enjoy thinking about my research all the time. The state of public-private confusion continues in a good way.

ただし、これはあくまでも「私の場合」です。私自身、チャレンジが好きな性格で、博士課程の進学も、博士号を取ったら何かが有利になるということよりも、そこにチャレンジすることが自分の人生を豊かにしてくれると信じているから。「誰々さんと同じように」ではなく、「自分がどう生きたいか」を考えることが大切だと思います。

Q: What are your future career plans?

Kitagawa: Since joining the company, I've been able to make connections with a variety of people, and I'd like to consider the option of starting a business someday. I am the kind of person who wants to entrust those things that I cannot do myself to those who can, pay them in return, and achieve interesting things together. I am very happy that I was able to meet you.

While there are things that only Panasonic, a company that represents Japan, can do, there are bound to be things that such a large company cannot reach out to. Because acoustic technology is a niche special technology, I would like to polish what I can proudly say, "Only I can do this!"
