Congratulations to all the 9th generation students on their adoption. ALP was launched in 2013 with the aim of significantly transforming graduate school doctoral education, with the aim of enabling graduates of the doctoral course to play an active role not only in the academic field, but also in the industrial world, including the private sector. did. As you know, the ALP was an extremely ambitious program at the time, designed to acquire specialized skills plus α, such as the ability to see the big picture, the ability to open up frontiers, the ability to act internationally, and the ability to introspect. did. Their achievements have been highly evaluated, and 56 graduates are active in various fields of society.
Furthermore, based on the achievements of the ALP, our university has created a series of cross-graduate educational programs that will enhance specialized skills plus the power of something else. Fellowship programs focused on research support and financial support for the development of doctoral human resources have also been enhanced.
You will spend the next four years and six months at ALP, which spearheaded graduate school education reforms at Hokkaido University. Although the corona crisis is on the verge of convergence, society is undergoing irreversible transformation, and the world situation is changing in an unpredictable way. This is clear when you think about what you should acquire in the future, the position of doctoral human resources in society, and your future prospects. By all means, I hope that you will continue to have a clear sense of purpose and participate in the program, meet the needs of society, and grow as a doctoral person who can realize your own future vision.
Professor Koichiro Ishimori of the Faculty of Science and Vice President of Hokkaido University University (ALP Coordinator) then gave a speech.
Value "enthusiasm" in everything
Congratulations to all the 9th graders. On behalf of ALP, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of you. Even though the coronavirus crisis seems to be converging, I think there are still some inconveniences. But don't worry, ALP's curriculum has been flexible and fast enough to keep you learning. In particular, the ban on overseas travel has been lifted, so I think that some of the restricted activities will resume.
This program is all about you. I want everyone to fully demonstrate their abilities, so please keep telling them what you want to do.
Well, last week there was a lecture by Professor Benjamin List. He is a specially Specially Appointed professor at the university's ICReDD and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry last year. Here are some of the memorable words he left behind at the lecture. It was "Follow your enthusiasm." ALP has a variety of events, so please proceed with interest and enthusiasm. Furthermore, Professor Liszt said, “The original reaction to winning the Nobel Prize was something I happened to discover as serendipity (a product of chance). I was able to move forward.” If you don't work with enthusiasm, you won't be able to demonstrate your abilities. After four and a half years, I hope that you will be able to experience what you have learned at ALP. Please do your best.
This was followed by a welcome seminar by Emeritus Professor Akira Hasegawa of Hokkaido University University. Emeritus Professor Hasegawa gave a lecture entitled "The Order of Science" on Zoom from England, where he was on a business trip.
In an environment where academic freedom is socially guaranteed, it is important for researchers to work proactively and with introspective intelligence. This is one way of the order of learning, and I explained the 'introspective intelligence'. It seems that the enthusiastic gazes of the 9th gen members reached Mr. Hasegawa through the monitor.
