研究者本人がテーマを設定できる環境に惹かれて

「勤め先はNTTの研究所です」と紹介すると、通信やデバイスに関する研究のみを掘り下げているところだと思われがちですが、NTT研究所の数は12個にわたり、基礎から開発までジャンルも多岐にわたっています。私が所属するNTT物性科学基礎研究所は文字どおり基礎研究が中心で、世界初・世界一の技術や新材料を発見するというミッションのもと、研究員各自が自分の研究に注力しています。

The motivations for my interest in our company are (1) the fact that researchers themselves can relatively freely set their own themes with a long-term span and ample budget, and (2) the ability to go from basic research to product development all at once. Because I found it attractive. When I was in graduate school, one of our employees came to see the experimental equipment.

「独立ラボ運営」を企業版にアップデート

Currently, I am doing activities as a researcher that I did when I was in graduate school, such as ``finding a research theme on my own, making a research plan, executing it, and writing a paper'' or ``choosing an academic conference that I am interested in, preparing for it, attending and presenting it.'' We continue to update to the “corporate version” as it is. The “corporate version” is premised on obtaining the approval of the company, and the big difference from the university is that you can change your self-centered sense of time, “you can come when you want and leave when you want.” Scheduling and management skills are required to steadily advance research in a well-regulated life.

こうした環境にいる自分が真っ先に思い出す経験と言えば、北海道大学物質科学フロンティアを開拓するAmbitiousリーダー育成プログラム(ALP)の最終年度に選択した「独立ラボ運営」です。「独立ラボ運営」では後輩をRAとして雇用し周囲に協力を仰いだり、高額な予算を管理するなど研究の難しさやチームリーダーの気持ちを実感できました。このときの経験をベースに、今は企業人としての責任を自覚しながら研究マネジメントの質を高めていきたいと考えています。

研究職以外のスタッフも説得できるプレゼンを

ALPで得た多彩な学びの中で今も特に活かされていると感じるのは、新たな知見に挑む「フロンティア開拓力」と異分野の中で自分の立ち位置を見つめる「俯瞰力」、これらに加えて科学技術コミュニケーションのカリキュラムは受講して本当によかったと感じています。企業にはさまざまな部署があり、研究を前に進めるためには異分野の研究者だけでなく研究現場にいない広報や事務方の人たちにも自分の研究の価値を理解してもらう必要があります。そういうときに相手が理解できない数字を羅列するのではなく、「その研究は面白そうだね」と認めてもらえるようにプレゼンテーションを試行錯誤するのは、科学技術コミュニケーションの重要性を理解できているから。大きなアドバンテージになっていると思います。

思い込みで進路を狭めず、やりたいことを見直す

Currently, most of the recruits in my department have doctoral degrees. Given the nature of the work called “basic research,” in which research is pursued to the best of one’s liking and results are produced, my interpretation is that it is expected that the achievements of Ph.D. Since the company is thinking over a medium- to long-term research span of 5 to 10 years, I would like to continue to be inspired by the researchers around me and lead to impactful research results.

自分のように企業でアカデミックなことができるケースはそう多くはないかもしれませんが、「企業に行けば基礎研究ができない」とか「アカデミックでは社会に直結する開発がしづらい」といった思い込みで進路を狭めて考えてしまうのは、少し早計かもしれません。迷ったときはまず、自分のやりたいことは何かをもう一度見つめ直すことをおすすめします。その答えが見えてくると、自ずと具体的な道が開けてくるのではないでしょうか。
