September 22, 2020, Hokkaido University The closing ceremony for the third batch of Ambitious Leader's Program Fostering Future Leaders to Open New Frontiers in Materials Science (ALP) transfer students was held. ALP is an educational program that fosters human resources who study cross-disciplinary studies centered on material science, cultivate high abilities as members of society, and who will play an active role internationally in a wide range of fields such as not only academic and research institutions but also private companies after obtaining a degree. In March 2020, the subsidy period as a subsidy project of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology ended, but it has been decided to continue to work as a project of Hokkaido University.
The graduate is Mr. Zheng Kin, a Environmental Science. After presenting the certificate to Mr. Tay, Executive Director Akira Hasegawa (Program Director, Hokkaido UniversityVice President and a congratulatory speech from Professor Koichiro Ishimori, the program coordinator.
*Titles are current at the time of graduation ceremony.
Greetings from Executive Director Hasegawa
Tay Kin, congratulations on your graduation. This ALP is a graduate education program that represents Hokkaido University. Through seven years of activities, we have achieved results, and we are proud that we have grown into one of the best programs in Japan. Since its inception in 2013, many degree-seeking students have gone on to work at research institutes and private companies. Tay will be one of those friends from today. Take advantage of the overwhelming expertise, ability to see things from a bird's-eye view, and communication skills that you learned at ALP, and play an active role to your heart's content.
In the past half year, the world has changed dramatically due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection. For example, online communication has spread rapidly. There has been such a movement as a global trend for several years, but we could not have predicted that it would spread to all educational settings, including our university. Society and people's values change greatly due to unexpected incidents. Since the 1990s, globalization, the ICT revolution, natural disasters such as 3.11 and the Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake, climate change due to global warming, and the spread of the new coronavirus infection have all overlapped, and the quality and speed of social change cannot be predicted. It's getting harder.
At the same time, the future should be pioneered by scientific progress and technological innovation. As a result, new issues will arise, which will be imposed on us, and will have a major impact on society. I think that the accumulation of such changes will continue in the future. In order to survive in such an environment, I hope that you will use the skills you have cultivated at ALP to tackle global issues and play an active role as a global leader.
Greetings from ALP Coordinator Koichiro Ishimori
Tay, congratulations on your graduation. Although the spread of the new coronavirus infection has not subsided, I am very happy to be able to meet in person and welcome the completion ceremony. This overlaps with Dr. Hasegawa's words, but the world is changing dramatically now. In such a situation, there are words that come to mind. As Darwin was quoted as saying, "The last survivor is not the strongest, nor the most intelligent. It is the most adaptable to change."
At ALP, you should have not only acquired high-level specialized skills, but also learned how to utilize them with the ability to take a bird's eye view. With my frontier pioneering ability, I got to know people in companies, and with my introspective intelligence, I learned to be considerate of others. It is precisely because of this kind of learning that we are able to respond to diverse changes. With the future uncertain, you may feel anxious about going out into the new world, but I hope that you will use what you have learned at ALP to open up a new future and play an active role as a global leader that contributes to the world.
Mr. Tei responded to the encouragement from Executive Director Hasegawa and Coordinator Ishimori
The three years I was enrolled at ALP, starting with the Hokkaido Iburi earthquake in September 2018, have been turbulent until today. I have learned a lot from the fact that people not only in Japan but all over the world face new challenges every day. As Professor Ishimori said, I would like to continue my studies as a member of society who can respond to changes.
I would like to share some of my memories from ALP. Writing a review in a new research field was difficult, but thanks to the guidance of my advisor, Dr. Yagi, I was able to pass the exam and gain confidence. Realize the importance of cross-disciplinary exchanges, participate in cross-disciplinary exchange events in Japan and overseas, experience the latest knowledge not only in chemistry, but also in mathematics and life sciences, and strengthen your ability to take a broad perspective and international practical skills. is ready. In addition, I nurtured my frontier pioneering skills through classes at a corporate consortium, participated in research ethics seminars, and made efforts to improve my introspective intelligence. Through this experience at ALP, I will strive to improve my ability to flexibly deal with global issues as a global leader and open up the future. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the teachers, staff, and friends who have given me guidance and support.
